flight by the Coastal Guard of Icetand. The
concentration at the ice edge is mostly 8/s,
while there is open water or open drift ice
along the northern coasts.
Sailing by Cape Straumnes was much impead-
ed by ice after February 13 although it luas
never quite blocked throughout the month.
After February 26 sailing by Cape Langanes
was also made difficult.
The sudden advance of the ice might be
caused by a W-erly gale on February 9 followed
up on the 12tli by a severe N-erly blizzard.
From the bulk of ice reports sent by ships
and meteorological stations onlv a few will be
quoted.

The northern and eastern coasts were mostly

ice conditions taere observed every third day
by the Coastal Guard Plane TF-SIF and dayly
from meteorological coastal stations. Only a few
of tliese reports can be quoted.
h/s The coasting vessel Esja passes Cape
Horn through a 60 m broad lead in the ice
and succeeds in roúnding the northeastern head-
lands.
4/3 Drift ice lias filled some of the fjords
on the E-coast, wliile there is little ice offshore.
T-0/3 Tlie ice is filling the Húnaflói, but is
still about 20 miles off Cape Langanes.
13/3 A Danish reconnoitring flight (Captain
V. Aðalsteinsson) puts the ice edge roughly at
