NE-ern coasts are still icebound at the close of
the month.
The surface temperature of the sea icas nor-
mal 6—7° C along the western coast but 0—1°
or 3° C below normal off the NW-ern coasts.
Off the eastern N-coasts temperature zuas from
0° to 0.8° C or 3—4° beloiu normal. The
E-Icelandic current was unnormally colcl down
lo 150—200 m.
4/g The main ice edge with concentration
of 5 to 9 was running roughly fronr 6650/2500
- 6645/2300 - 6630/2200 - 6650/2040 - 6700/
1800 - 6700/1550 - 6640/1550 - 6640/1415 -
6620/1420 - 6620/1330.
b/5 Eight icebergs were observed on western
Húnaflói. They were still sightecl on May 17
at similar positions.
16/r, Bakkafoss M/g reached the harbour of
Raufarhöfn on May 4 and was icebound there
for 12 days.
25/5 All the inner and western branches ol'
Húnaflói still filled witli ice.
JUNE 1965
The average distance of the ice edge off Cape
Straumnes seems lo have been 30 miles or more.
During the first 10 days of this rnonlh coasl-
ing vessels encounler strips of ice or scattered
brash and blocks in coaslal waters. After the
lOth no such reports have been received.
3/(i From tlie Coastal Guard: The main ice
limits are extending roughly front 6700/2230 to
6740/1835. There are still close ice belts in
Húnaflói and several icebergs, but a good deal
of the ice has drifted out of the bay and fornt-
ed a 15 rniles broad ice belt off Skagi, the
eastern headland. This ice belt reachecl from
Kálfshamarsvík to 30 miles offshore.
f,/(! The Coastal Guard reports 0830 z: Con-
siderable brash and single blocks on tlie sailing
route 26 miles SE of Cape Horn.
8/r, Hraun á Skaga 0900 z: Open pack icc
off the coast drifting slowly NE-wards.
n/o Fjallfoss 1[/g 0210 z: A small strip of ice
extending as far northwards as sighted from
pos. 16 miles 355° true off Cape Skagi.
10/n Herðubreið M/g 1430 z: At 18 miles 348°
true from Cape Rifsnes sighted a 5 miles belt
of brash and a few blocks. Seems to be closer
towards North.
JULY 1965
About ihe micldle of the month the ice edge
was about 25 miles NW of Cape Straumnes ancl
about 140 miles N of the headland Slétta.
14/t Ægir 1200 z: From pos. 6818/1618 an
ice belt sighted extending from E to W.
30/t Litlafell 2230 z: A big strip of ice on
the sailing route N of Odinsbodi drifting to-
wards the coast.
AUGUST 1965
The reported maximum distance of the ice
edge NW of Cape Slraumnes about 40 miles
luith nearest approacli of 20 miles to the N of
Cape Horn. Several small strips and scattered
blocks luere sighted nearer to the coast.
2/a Cape Horn 0900 z: Considerable drift ice.
on the deepest sailing route to the NE of the
Lighthouse.
4/a Coastal Guard reports: The ice edge
running roughly from 6700/2440 — 6715/2320
- 6700/2320- 6700/2315 - 6715/2315, - and
from 6715/2220 - 6650/2130 - 6625/2150.
9/s A fishing boat reports at 2030 z from
position 30 miles magnetic N off Cape Skagi:
Three miles broacl ice be 11 extending from NE
to SW as far as sighted.
®/8 Coastal Guard reports: An ice edge sight-
ed ab. 20 miles N of Cape Horn. Then running
roughly 6635/2140 - 6640/2040 - 6645/2100 -
6705/2005 — 6705/1930. Some loose brash ancl
blocks inside these limits.
11/a Scattered drift ice still observed at the
mouth of Húnaflói at 53° true and 23 miles off
Drangaskörd.
17/a A fishing boat reports considerable drift
ice, extending from E to W at 6745/1725, NE
of Kolbeinsey.
20/8 Ægir M/g 0900 z: Position 6536/3442.
Scattered blocks sighted.
SEPTEMBER 1965
The average position of the ice edge ATF o/
Cape Straumnes was ab. 40 miles. Some brash
or blocks was inside these limits.
3_4/o An ice edge reported from 6615/2600
to 6655/2400.

Large strips of ice observed about 38 miles
NE of Cape Horn.
