Summary
Deserted Homesteads
The project “Deserted Homesteads and Rural Dwellings” started in 2011, and
has been ongoing for the past three summers. The main objective of the research
is to establish a methodology for the documentation of deserted dwellings and
structures in rural Iceland. Furthermore, it involves looking into the possibilities
of re-utilization, which is done by focusing primarily on the resources of Icelandic
rural vernacular in relationship to the cultural heritage, preservation and reuse. The
focus of this paper is on two areas in the northeast, Langanes and Melrakkaslétta.
However, these are only two examples of the overall project which has issued
seven reports and is sponsored, in part, by a grant from the Icelandic Research
Fund for Graduate Students.
