Editiones Arnamagnæanæ. Series B - 01.10.1960, Síða 9
PREFACE
An early draft of the present edition was aocepted
as a thesis for the degree of M.A. of Sheffield Universi-
ty in 1951, the work being carried out while I was
a Royal Danish Government scholar in Copenhagen
in 1950—1. The present edition is a complete re-
working of the material originally collected, so that
very little of the earlier draft remains. I should like
to thank the Royal Danish Government and the
British Council for giving me the opportunity of be-
ginning this piece of research, and the librarians and
staffs of the following libraries for their readiness to
lend, and take care of manuscripts, and to answer
queries: Copenhagen University Library; Royal Li-
brary, Copenhagen; Royal Library, Stockholm; Na-
tional Library, Reykjavík; Nottingham University
Library. I should also like to express my gratitude
to a number of scholars: to Professor R. M. Wilson,
Dr K. Cameron and Mr F. S. Scott, who together
first introduced rne to the study of Old Norse and
who have been constantly helpful and encouraging,
and to Professor A. C. Cawley for his valuable, if
devastating, criticisms of my early work on this text.
Finally, I must thank Professor Jón Helgason of
Copenhagen University, Director of the Arnamagnean
Institute, for his patience in dealing with one who
was a novice both in the study of the sagas and in
the art of editing, for his resourcefulness in saving
