several have been filled at later dates with alphabets,
prayers etc., sometimes in ink, sometimes scratched
in with a dry point. Fo. 31r was completed in a crude
late hand with an account of the virtue of prayer to
Sancta Dorothea.
Gering distinguished two hands in the AM. 335, 4°
text of Gibbons saga, one, that in which the preceding
texts were written, ending at the bottom of fo. 28r,
the other beginning fo. 28v and continuing to the
end of the manuscript.2 Certainly two scribes (1, 8
below) were responsible for the bulk of the saga text,
but there may be a number of other hands, some of
which can be distinguished with a good deal of cer-
tainty, while others are more doubtful. The following
are suggested here:
1, which may be that of the text immediately pre-
ceding Gibbons saga, is responsible for the whole of
fos. 19r, 20v, 21r, 22, 23v, 24, 25, 26r, 27r, and for
fo. 20r lines 1—19 ok ivmfrvin-at 91—1017, fo. 21v
lines 1—6 tekr-nadum 182 ~12 and lines 20—26 ridr
-dvergrinn 1918—209, fo. 23rlines 1—6heim-kongs 273—■

hand varies considerably both in size and in form.
On fo. 21r, for example, there are thirty-one lines a
page and an average of about seventy letters to the
line, but on fo. 24r, where the scribe seems to be
using a quill which is becoming very blunt, there are
only twenty-seven lines to the page and an average
of about fifty-six letters a line.
2 is responsible for fo. 20r lines 20—32 eg-skeimtanar
1017—125, fo. 31r lines 1—13 vgiptu-æfintyr 9718—9813.
