722—745 almost certainly belongs in this section. This
hand is much smaller and more compact than 1, aver-
aging over seventy-five letters to the line. It also diífers
from 1 in details of spelling: so, for example, e (= é) is
sometimes spelt ie (siet 115, þier1 ll6, sier 118, ll9,
sie 742) and t in a weakly stressed syllable th (ath ll4,
ll15, 723, 725), forms which never appear in 1, while
the 2 forms so ll8, ll10, So ll18, suo 727, 7310, 9726,
sg 741 stand distinct from the 1 forms sva, sua.
3 is responsible for fo. 21v lines 6—20 j-nætr 1812—
1918. This is an elongated hand, quite distinct in
form from 1, but not certainly different from 2. In
this connection the forms sier 1817, ath 193, so 1813
may be noted.
4 is found in fo. 23r lines 6—28 syni-stolkongshins
284—315, tlie first word written over a text in hand 1.
This is a distinctive hand, rather coarse in form with
letters widely spaced — there are about sixty letters
to the line. The hand differs from the other liands
of Gibbons saga in its use of the symbol ar in fra/mdvt
297, þa/ 305, ha/fdvm 307, and in its almost consistent
setting of a point above the y form, that of lydr 294
being the only exception.
5 is responsible for fo. 26v lines 1—8 -la-alidin 593—
604. This hand is distinct in form from 1, but could
be the same as 2, 3. The spellings sier 598, so 602
link this hand with 2, 3 against 1, hut note giorsamlega
593 compared with the common use of -ligr, -liga
forms in 2 (heidarliga ll1, kuenligar ll17, sarliga 9719,
hiartaliga 985) and 3 (vndarliga 1817).
6 is found in fo. 27v lines 2—8 klædum-patriarcha
666—672. Hand 6 is quite different in form from any
of the other liands of Gibbons saga. Distinctive spelling
features are the use of áá in þráádum 668, áá 669, 6613
(2x), and ð in tðludu 6610, brðtt 6613.
