At the bottom of fo. 46r stood the words Hier epter
biriast sagan af Gybbon, hut they were crossed out
at a later date, as was the first page of the saga text
(= fo. 46v). The first legible page of the original
text (= fo. 48r, fo. lr in the separate nuinbering)
begins þar a liggia. Before this two new leaves were
inserted, the first, unnumbered, with the words
Gibbons Saga. on the recto side, the second (= fo.
47) with a copy of the deleted beginning on the verso
in the hand of one of Árni Magnússon’s scribes. Apart
from these and from one later addition (see below,
p. XXV) Gibbons saga is in a single hand. The written
area measures 13 X 9 cm., and there are twenty-one
to twenty-nine lines to the page.
Árni Magnússon was very fond of dividing volumes
containing several sagas into their separate parts,
and he presumably intended to split up AM. 119a,

Eles saga volume, and its verso text could therefore
be crossed out, while new title and first pages for
Gibbons saga would be prepared. The intended divi-
sion of the volume was, however, not carried out.
AM. 585c, 4°, dated 1691. A paper manuscript of
twenty-nine leaves, 20 X 15.5 cm. This manuscript
is part of a larger collection of romantic sagas. The
folios are numbered in pencil in the middle of the
top border, and there is also a numbering by pages
in ink at the top outer corner, this numbering, 87—
144, continuing that of MS AM. 585b, 4°. Gibbons
saga occupies fos. lr—19r (pp. 87—123), but fo. 1
is a later addition by one of Árni Magnússon’s scribes,
fo. 2r beginning um herberged siáande 510 _n. Apart
from the inserted beginning Gibbons saga is in a single
hand, that of the “Jon Thordarsson” whose signature
appears at the bottom of fo. 19r. The written area
