given from the extant portions of B (31—241,783—9813
while those from C are given up to the end of chapter
18 (896), the text of the C ending of the saga occupying
pp. 99—114. Complete variant readings are given
from D, the central, supplied, portion of AM. 119a,
8° (251—752), and from the fragment E (incompletely
available between 967 and 9812). The central episode
of AM. 585c, 4° is set below and parallel to the main
text on pp. 23—78.
The texts of the manuscripts are reproduced as
closely as possible. The following changes have, how-
ever, been made:
(a) Emendations and additions have been made to
the main text, but only where necessary to the sense.
Emendations are preceded by an asterisk. Letters or
words omitted by scribes are added in diagonal
brackets < ). Single letters omitted are added in
accordance with the usual spelling conventions of the
scribe in question. Full words are added in the
spelling of one of the other manuscripts, and the
source of the addition is quoted below the line.
Usually this source will be the earliest available ma-
nuscript, but in cases where that has a variant read-
ing at the point in question, the manuscript with
the closest reading to the main text supplies the
omission.
(b) Words or letters originally in the manuscript but
now illegible or torn away are added in square brack-
ets [ ].
(c) The punctuation of the manuscripts, usually very
sparse and inconsistent, has been retained as far as
possible. Occasional stops — those indicating abbre-
viations or placed at the ends of lines of the manu-
scripts — have been removed. Capital letters have
been given consistently to all proper names, except
those found in the variant readings.
