Orthography.
The following is not intended as an account of the
spelling practices of the various scribes responsihle
for the texts on which this edition is based. It gives
only the major points of spelling important for the
expansion of abbreviations in A.
1. A, hand 1.
Vowels. Vowel lengths are not indicated, save occa-
sionally by the use of special symbols, as aa for á
in æ. 411, hær 151.
(a) in stressed syllables.
a. vá commonly remains in the forms sva 34, 134, 136
sua 93 etc. Elsewhere both a and o forms appear, as
in uarum 516, vapnurn 1612 vapnvm 516, 517, uapnns
1613, uapn 399 vapnn 541, but voradi 347, vopnvm 675,
vopnn 6710.
Z7-umlaut of a is commonly written o, as, for exam-
ple, in bornn 32, verolldinna 41, oll lond 916, alogvm
1513. Occasionally the sound is represented by av, as
in havfdv 611 havf(d}v 615, havfvd- 708.
c. e is written ei on a number of occasions: so, for
example, in heirra 51, d(y)eirg 96, d(y)eirginn 96 -7,
geifa 1513, heifdi 206 heif(d)i 361, heifir 2011, eilskvgi
2014, veil 2114, 2116 (2x), kveid(i)vr 325. Occasionally
ei is used for é, as perhaps in heit 32 and in þeir ( =
þér) 1518. The abbreviation þr, which scribe 1 common-
ly uses for the 3. pl. pron. þeir, is used for þér in a
number of cases, as 1315, 167, 2017, 365, 406 etc. In
