Inverted spelhngs of ei as e occur in a number of
forms, as hemminvm 2015 hemminum 216, kvrtesligvm
228, hetir 2211, stenni 3710, hemsins 431, stenin 447,
letit 624. The abbreviation þ + -er sym bol/þ + -er
symbol + r, which scribe 1 usually uses for þer, is
used for the 3. pl. pron. þeir 144, 1919. In view of the
inverted spellings the abbreviation at these points
has been expanded þerjþerr.
e usually remains before gi/ge and gj, as in segia
310, 51, 224, þegia 224, segir 225, legil 283. There are,
however, several forms indicating diphthongisation
to ei, as seigjija 2314, deigj 422, eiggiandi 436.
e is usually diphthongised to ei before ng, nk, as
in eingi 3S, leinngi 52, st(rjeingr 57, feingv 1216,
streinngt 2114 streingt 231. There are occasional ex-
ceptions, as drengr 266, which, however, is an insert
above the line and possibly not in hand 1, and
drenngskap 628.
e is usual in kemr 172, 281, 506 etc. There seems to
be a form kæmr 458, though the vowel is of curious
shape.
é is usually written e, never ie.
i. i is written in such forms as mikil 136, 662, mikill
2214, mikinn 181, 513, 651, mikit 331, 504, but it has
become y in forms like mykla 2110, myklvm 238, 421,
myklv 481.
o. o varies with u in forms of the word son: so, sunn
156, 20 3 svn 2111, but sonn 207, 2010, 2011, 2212 etc.
o is raised to u in hvnn 361.
u. Initial u is usually represented by v, and medial
u by u, but scribe 1 is not at all consistent in his use
of these letters, while it is sometimes not clear which
form is intended.
y. y is unrounded to i when followed by i/e or j in
