Upon examination, Western Society
is hard-working and uses design in
many ways, such as in advertising
and construction, but is not so good
in using design in planning. Their
general attitude towards design is
very important for the continuing
development of industry, but many
have not done their part for design-
ing. Their opinions, which are part of
design methodology, can be good
when used with strategy formation in
prosperity issues and on respective
fields of study and social roles.
Of these 25 countries, 34 designing
centres are operating, which take on
different roles in the community. Of
these designing centres, 30% take
their part in creating new knowledge,
and 40% are significantly the middle-
man between designing organisa-
tions and industrial business. 50% of
these designing centres out-source
their consultancy services. All offer
general education in various forms,
such as with classes and exhibitions.
The decisions have included some of
countries taking part in the policy
study on growth in design in the
coming year, such as Denmark.
Their which 30% of the companies
there use to purchase design servic-
es in their operations today, but is
directed is because to this proportion
increase 50% in the near future.
The Design Department of The
lceland Academy of the Arts is a par-
ticipant in the large study of business
locations design in Europe, in co-
operation with the Business
Department of the University of
lceland and many foreign universities.
This study includes the largest num-
ber of Swedish participants, and will
be interesting to examine once the
conclusions are released, altough it
is planned to take 1 -2 years.
Last spring, a committee worked on
how business and industrial min-
istries studied environmental design
in lceland. The committee consulted
several large participants which used
design in the economy and have
contributed to the minister
on actions to strengthen design in
lceland. One idea replaces efforts of
the Design Centre in some other
form. The next step in lceland is to
lay down a strategy about co-opera-
tion in general design. Only some
countries have addressed this issue,
yet throughout Europe work is cur-
rently being done to correct this. The
Nordic countries have advanced the
furthest, whilst Britain and Holland
remain far behind.
The governments of these countries
have taken resolutions about the sig-
nificance of design in decision-mak-
ing on societal changes, quality stan-
dards and education. This work is
currently in revision. ■
