í fyrstu vefútgáfu Lýsis var lögð áher-
sla á að þjónusta myndlistarfólk,
hönnuði og letursérfræðinga en í
næstu útgáfu vefsins verður settur
upp gagnagrunns- og aðgangstýrður
vefur. Þetta er gert til að auðvelda
aðgang fræðimanna að efninu. Þeir
geta t.d. sett inn umsagnir um mynd-
irnar og leitað eftir efnisflokkum.
Vefur Lýsis er einnig söluvefur þar
sem notendum gefst kostur á að
panta myndir í gegnum vefinn en
framleiðandi er Dikta ehf. Hönnun og
uppsetning á vef Lýsis ásamt skrán-
ingu í gagnagrunninn hefur verið í
höndum Maríu Jakobsdóttur bóka-
safns- og upplýsingafræðings og
nema í kerfisfræði við HR. Darri Lor-
enzen myndlistamaður sér um allt
útlit vefsins og Una Lorenzen nemi í
grafiskri hönnun um myndvinnslu. ■

Since 1999, I have been searching
for and recording prints in ancient
lcelandic manuscripts. Around the
middle of last November, a small
exhibit of these pictures was opened
on www.lysir.is. Primary registration
of some 1,300 prints has alread
been completed in a special picture-
database. The next release of the
website will include an information
site with a powerful search engine.
There were many surprises in the
approximately 600 lcelandic manu-
scripts examined. They cover a wide
field of topics and were written dur-
ing a period of three hundred years,
from about 1550 to about 1850. This
is the time best known for natural
disasters, poverty and general deso-
lation. I had not expected these
books to glow with the joy of story-
telling in text and pictures. Despite
the hard times, the quest for knowl-
edge and the will to distribute „the
good word“ is obvious. People obvi-
ously copied a lot from others, origi-
nals being lent between farms with
each writer perhaps improving the
story slightly for the better. When you
thumb through these manuscripts
and lookat the pictures, it is obvious
that they are full of mysticism. The
variety is great. There are pictures in
psalms and legal books, exact dia-
grams of mathematical solutions and
prints of people, animals and plants.
Books on magic are numerous,
although Jesus Christ and the Virgin
Mary have been added to the magic
letters for safety’s sake.

To those working actively on this project from
the start, www.lysir.is has always appeared as a
young boy who got lost, but is now found and
discovering life anew. This is symboiized by
using a picture of the good Janus, who saw
both the past and into the future, as a iogo.
