propose various public buildings or
semi-public buildings, such as the
Concert/Conference building. The
area to the west will be used for
mixed development of service activi-
ties and housing. Compared to aver-
age densities of other Central Areas,
some 400 - 600,000 m2 of new
buildings could be erected in this
area. This in turn could be translated
into 2 - 3,000 flats and 100
- 200,000 m2 of service industry,
storage and service access, and
parking in the „basement."
A unique opportunity to plan a
Central Area development of a higher
standard is before us. Technically,
this is a rather complicated venture,
but nothing that cannot be solved.
Approximately some 10,000 new
inhabitants and employees can move
into the area, which would guarantee
the redevelopment of all shopping
and services, and enable the Central
Area anew to compete with other
service centres in the Capital Area.
The landing for ocean liners is moved
further out into the harbour. These
ships gain better access and need
no longer to dock in the Sunda-har-
bour. Although this development will
require considerable capital, it should
also be borne in mind that very valu-
able building sites are also created at
the same time as a simple solution is
found to various expensive undertak-
ings, which need to be carried out if
Reykjavík wants to continue as the
capital of a fairly well-off and pro-
gressive state. ■

greina. Þetta er mjög mikilvæg viðurkenning fyrir
störf ungs íslensks hönnuðar og hvatning fyrir aðra

hefti.

was recently
awarded one
of the most
prestigious
design prizes
in the world,
the Torsten
and Wanja
Söderbergs
Skandinaviska Designpris. This prize is awarded to
designers from all fields of design. This is a very
important recognition for the work of a young
designer and an encouragement for others work-
ing in this field. The magazine a\/s will publish an
article on the work of Sigurður Gústafsson in its
next issue.
