Lámili dhearr í føroyekum máli 77 fche meaning varies. Lámur m. means »front feg of an animal« (pes anterior animalis), especially of a cat (pes felis anterior), though it can also mean, according to a note of Jakob Jakob- sen’s taken down in Suðuroy, front flipper of a seal, in some places furtlher: Ihuman hand, »paw«. In Modern Faroese the word almost always has t)he meaning »left hand, left paw« and »one who is left-handed«, formerly kjaUámur [cadláamor] some- times [catláamor]. This word, oocurring in tihe digtionary MSS. from the 18th to the heginning of the 19th cenlury as kjadlaamur m. (sinistra manus, sinistra utens manu prae dextra) can hardly be anyithimg eise than >the Sco.ts Gaelic word íor »lef,t-hand« lámh chearr, which first dhanged to ’kjarr-lámr, later to ’kjdxrlám(u)r and finally (rl > 11 > dl) to [cadláamor], written kjallámur■ Thus Faroese has borrowed the Gaelic word for left-thand, placing the adjective first as in Norse. When lámur means »left hand« or »left-;handed man« etc. it may be an abbreviated form of kjallámur. BÓKMENTIR Flestallar tilvísingar í tekstinum eru so skilligar, at óneyðugt er at taka uppaftur bókatitlar o. tíl. Borgstrøm um keltiskt mál í Suðuroyggjum (har finna vit it. d. nútíðar framburð av orðunum lámh og cearr) og annað, sum Norðmenn hava skrivað um málið fyri vestan. — iHer nevni eg so bert nøkur verk, sum ikki eru nevnd, ella ikki eru nóg skilliga nevnd.
