revisit their native country; many more will keep up an active
correspondence with old friends at home; and thus new American
ideas will reach Iceland. God grant that none of those ideas which do
little credit to my countrymen may be introduced, but only those
which in the end may prove to be a blessing.
In Edinburgh I spent several pleasant hours in the family of Mr.
Douglas, all the members ofwhich spoke most pleasantly ofyou. Mr.
Douglas was very kind to me, because his most intimate American
friend is also a warm friend of mine.
I have not yet seen Mr. Quade, but shall doubtless encounter him
at some of the diplomatic dinner parties which I occasionally attend,
when I shall not forget your message.
Enclosed you will find a couple of literary notes, one or both of
which may seem to you of suíficient interest to be used for the
columns of ísafold. I find everywhere in Germany a growing taste for
the study of the old Icelandic literature. It is evident that when those
Nestors of Icelandic study in Germany, Maurer and Möbius and
Bergmann pass away, there will be plenty of younger men, like
Gering and Brenner and Edzardi, to take their places.1

Beztu þakkir fyrir vinsamlegt bréf, og þá ekki síður fyrir að muna eftir mér og þá
vinsemd, sem í því felst. Ég vona eins og þér, að íslandi hlotnist eitthvað gott frá
Ameríku, þótt ekki verði nema vegna útflutningsins þangað. Því að margir
útflytjendanna munu, þegar tímar líða, sjálfir heimsækja ættland sitt, og enn fleiri
munu skrifast rækilega á við gamla vini heima, og þannig berast nýjar amerískar
hugmyndir til íslands. Guð gefi, að engin þau lífsviðhorf, sem eru landsmönnum
mínum til lítils sóma, verði þar kynnt, heldur einungis þau, sem að lokum munu
verða til blessunar.
