and encouraging its people. The country undoubtedly has within it
the elements of a much higher prosperity than has been attained.
For the use of the young students I have sent to Mr. Ólsen my only
copies of some American journals, containing articles of mine on
Icelandic topics. You will doubtless fmd in them many sins, both of
omission and commission. My sketch of Jón Sigurðsson in the N. Y.
Tribune is far excelled by that of Dr. Maurer in the Augsburger
Allgemeine Zeitung, a copy of which Mr. Ólsen can show you, should
you not receive it from some other source.
As I have no especial Vorliebe for the Scottish isles, I should be
very glad to believe that the Sæmundar Edda is purely and simply
Icelandic, but I confess that the evidence against that theory seems to
me to be really overwhelming. And like Dr. Maurer I attach much
weight to Dr. Bugge’s recent investigations.1 I should, of course, be
glad to keep Baldr among my household gods, but he seems to be
getting too shadowy a divinity to pin one’s faith to.
Any literary news from Iceland, and especially any early
announcement offorthcoming books, would be very welcome to me. I
have read and re-read the recent numbers of ísafold.

Mér þótti mjög vænt um bréf yðar, og ég hefði svarað því með löngu bréfi, ef
íslandsfarið heföi ekki sótt þannig að mér, að ég var í óðaönn að búast til ferðar yfir
hið salta haf.
Vinur minn John Jay Knox, gjaldeyrismálastjóri, skrifar mér, að hann hafi sent
yður fyrir mín orð ýmis gögn um bankakerfi okkar. Ég vona, að þér hafið fengið þau.
Ég held, að í því séu ýmis atriði líkleg til að verða íslandi að gagni.
Ég er yður fullkomlega sammála um það, að íslendingar verða að heíjast til
framfara af sjálfum sér. Engu að síður er ég hlynntur hverjum þeim aðgerðum eða
áhrifum utan frá, er verða til að koma hreyfingu á og hvetja þjóðina. í landinu eru
tvímælalaust skilyrði til miklu meiri farsældar en raun er ennþá á orðin.
