A grid system for the study of plant distribution in Iceland

A grid system dividing Iceland into 10x10 km squares has been developed,
and is recommended for the study of plant distribution in the country (fig. 1).
It is based on the 40x44 km grid, which divides the country into the atlas
sheets (scale 1:100 000) originally published by the Geodetic Institute in Copen-
hagen, and continued by Landmælingar íslands, Reykjavík. Everysheetis divided
into four 10 cm broad (10 km) strips by grid lines running from east to west.
The north—south lines of the grid do not always match with the limits of the
sheets, which are 44 cm broad from east to west. The western limitof sheets 61-69
(center line of the country) serves as a base line from which the grid is formecl
to east and west. Most sheets therefore have either 2, 4. 6 or 8 cm broad square
parts on their east and west sides, which continue onto adjacent sheets. The
grid lines can be easily drawn on the Geodetic Institute rnaps of either the
1:100 000 or 1:250 000 scale for use in tbe field. This grid system has been
used witli good results for distribution maps for the bryopliyte- and lichen
flora of Iceland, now in preparation.

Tekið saman og birt samkvæmt fyrirmælum í 8. grein laga Hins
íslenzka náttúrufræðifélags. Ártölin framan við nöfnin sýna, hve-
nær menn hafa gerzt félagar. Ártöl vantar við nöfn margra, sem
gengu í félagið árin 1959—1964. Félög og stofnanir, sem kaupa
Náttúrufræðinginn, eru ekki skráðar sem félagar, en skrá um þá
kaupendur fer á eftir félagatalinu.
Heildartölur félaga og áskrifenda, samkvæmt eftirfarandi skrá,
eru þessar: Heiðursfélagar 2, kjörfélagar 4, ævifélagar 73, ársfélagar
