Jesus told us of it. I am the light of the World; Sign of
God’s loving welcome and forgiveness. we in our loneliness
oft-times stray near these heavenly rays which shine steadily
from Calvary’s Time. We see the Light Eternal in God’s
Window and are siezed by impulse to rush Home into the
Everlasting Arms. Our way, — what is it? The answer is
prayer, for by it we follow the Leading Light of God’s
Word into the changeless Homeland of Friendship where
there is no loneliness.
All of you who have truly caught a glimpse of Home
and who have thereby found unchanging refuge in a chang-
ing world, high purpose fulfilled in knowing Christ, happiness
shining through all sorrow and Peace that passes under-
standing; all of you are gripped with the desire to lead all
others Home. You crave to show the way Home to those
who are absent from God’s love whether they be at your
side in church or many miles away. You see the unhappy
plight of friends who are far away from the Homeland
of God’s Love. You weep over loved ones who are crossing
restless seas of loneliness and who are wandering through
the foreign lands of homesickness even as you sorrow after
loved ones in physical danger and on the reckless seas and
outposts of the world. And I know you are filled with craving
that there may be safe return. Again prayer is the answer.
It lights a darkened world. In a recent book by George A.
Buttrick, well worth your reading, the story is told of a
certain pastor who lives in “dark persecution” of his faith
and work. He was asked the secret of his “calm endurance”.
“When the house is dark”, he answered, “I do not try to
sweep away the darkness with a broom, I light a candle.”
That is part of prayer and that you will do if you would
help others find their way home in the dark. Let your light
so shine that it will be a beacon of guidance for others.
The story ends with Light; the Only Begotten given
for this homesick world that it may find Home which is
Life Eternal. The story becomes complete for you when
you light the candle of your life from the Changeless Light
that God has set in the window sill of the world. Let us
light a candle in our prayers for those who are far away
from God and thereby far from Home; and also for our
loved ones who knowing God’s Eternal Love are at Home
wherever they may be, but are in physical danger in all parts
of the world.
