were fond of versified history of all kinds. After he left Hvalsnes
:n 1651 he took a charge at Saurbæ on the coast of Hvalfjörður.
Here he spent the remaining years of his ministry in good financial
circumstances and enjoying the esteem of his parishioners. At the
age of about 50 he became afflicted with the dreadful disease of
leprosy, through which he lingered for ten years or until his death
in 1674. It was during those years that he composed the immortal
Passion Hymns. It is said that he made a vow to compose these
hymns if he were delivered from his tormentors in the Hvalsnes
parish. The Passion Hymns are 50 in number and tell the complete
story of Christ’s passion. They are songs of praise and thanksgiving
and sung to the beautiful chorals of the sixteenth century.
An effort is being made in Iceland at the present time to collect
sufficient funds to erect a Church at Saurbæ in his memory.
I hope I have conveyed to you some impressions of my visit
which may be of interest to you. We are grateful for having had
the privilege of visiting Iceland, and to have learned to know how
the people of the present day preserve and maintain the cultural
traditions of their fathers.

TO OUR MANY FRIENDS
The Sunrise Lutheran Camp is fortunate in enjoying the active
suppart of many well-wishers, shown in various ways. Donations
of cash to the camp’s funds, gifts of needed articles and equipment
or in voluntary contributions of time and valued services: all this
proves a friendly interest in this project.
The camp requires a yearly budget in order to operate effi-
ciently and for required expansions. Contributions to this budget
from those that have the cause of our youth at heart, would be
welcomed at all times and may be forwarded to the Tresurer, Mrs.
