ferðar innan 2 mánaða frá því einkenni
komu í ljós, þar sem ekki er ólíklegt, að
hjá mörgum af sjúklingunum í þessum
hópi, sem reyndust hafa óskurðtæk æxli,
hafi þau verið komin á það stig strax og
þau fóru að valda einkennum eða mjög
fljótt eftir það.
Öllum ber saman um það, að bæta megi
verulega horfur þessara sjúklinga með því,
að þeir hljóti gagngera rannsókn við fyrstu
einkenni og komist strax á skurðdeildir
þegar sjúkdómurinn er greindur.
Hultborn8 hélt því fram 1952 að hjá
sjúkl. með cancer coli et recti sé aðal-
vandamálið ekki meðferðin heldur grein-
ingin. Þessu eru vafalaust allir sammála
nú. Ekki verður því neitað, að greiningin
er betri nú en fyrir tuttugu árum og lækn-
ar eru efalaust betur á verði nú með auk-
inni þekkingu og reynslu á þessu sviði, en
betur má ef duga skal.
Þá verður og að hafa í huga þá sjúk-
dóma í ristli og endaþarmi, sem geta verið
undanfari eða forstig krabbameins, svo
sem polyposis familiaris, adenoma villosum
og colitis ulcerosa, svo að nokkuð sé nefnt.
Það verður því seint brýnt nægilega vel
fyrir læknum, utan sjúkrahúsa sem innan,
að vera vel á verði og rannsaka þá sjúkl-
inga ætíð gaumgæfilega, sem kvarta um
einkenni er gætu bent til krabbameins í
meltingarvegum.
Gleymum því ekki, að fyrsta læknis-
vitjun sjúklings, hvort sem um þennan
sjúkdóm eða einhvern annan er að ræða,
er gjarnan sú mikilvægasta.

SUMMARY
The incidence of gastric cancer in Icelanders
is very high, whereas the incidence of colon
and rectum cancer is relatively low. A com-
parison is made of the distribution of cancer
within the digestive tract of the Icelandic
population with that of three other Scandin-
avian countries.
During the twenty year period 1952-1971,
1144 patients with cancer in the digestive
tract were admitted to the Surgical Depart-
ment of the University Hospital in Iceland
(Landspitalinn).
In 751 of these cases the lesion was located
in the stomach, in 155 in the esophagus and
238 had coion or rectum cancer. 142 patients
had cancer in the colon, 65 males and 77
females. Average age was 61.9 years and 66.1
