Report on Sea Ice off the Icelandic Coasts, Oct. 1955-Sept. 1956
The Icelandic coasts were practically jree of
sea ice throughout the period, but a consider-
able nurnber of single icebergs and small floes
were observed near the northern coasts during
summer.
Distances are given in nautical miles.
OCTOBER 1955.
Tlie ice belt at tlie Greenlarid coast south of
Scoresbysund is only 20—30 miles wide and its
distance from Straumnes between 130 and 140
miles.
On 7 October the pack boundary was from
6850/2400 (K. Turner) to 6835/2510 to 6808/
2430 to 6815/2650 to 6815/2800 to Kap Edvard
Holm. The concentration within the area con-
sisted of 0—s/io brash ancl block with many
bergs, bergy bits and growlers. Many bergs were
seen down to 65° N.
Three icebergs were sighted off the north-
western coasts of Iceland.
NOVEMBER 1955.
The ice belt along the Greenland Coast had
become 60 á 70 miles wide. Its average distance
from. Straumnes was 110 miles witli nearest ap-
proach of 90 miles.
4/n The pack boundary was observed from
6915/2200 to 6732/2735 to 6810/2900 to 6728/
3000 til K. Hammer to Iv. Edvard Holm to
6645/3245 to Nigertussoq. The concentration
north of K. Hammer consisted of 2/10 young
ice. Many bergy bits and growlers were seen
within the pack boundary throughout the entire
area. A big iceberg at 6530/2800.
n/n The ice boundary was observed by
radar from Kap Brewster to 6925/2000—6654/
3245 to K. Gustav Holm. — The concentration
from Brewster to Nansens Fjorcl consisted of
s/io coverage puddle ice 10 miles offshore. Many
bergs and growlers were seen throughout the
entire area from Brewster to K. Edvard Holm.
20/n The pack boundary Was extending from
6940/2112-7000/1930-6915/1930-6655 /3000 to
K. Hammer. From K. Edvard Holm to 6638/
3100 to 6500/3600. The concentration within
the limits S of Edv. Holm consisted of i/io
coverage of small bergs, bergy bits and growlers.
North of K. Hammer to 70 N the coverage was
°/io brash and block, and throughout the en-
tire area few bergs and growlers were observed.
Coastal reports: From 4-23/n a big block or
iceberg was reported in the northern portion
of Hunafloi. 22-27/n a big strip of brash, block
and bergs was observed at 6700/2330. 21/u a
big iceberg about 2 miles ENE of Cape North.
The next day it strandecl at the Lighthouse
Látravík.
DECEMBER 1955.
The average distance of the ice edge from
Straumnes about 100 miles with nearest
approach of 85 miles. Scattered floes were ob-
served some 65 miles off Straumnes.
2/i2 Pack boundary observed along the east
coast of Greenland from K. Brewster to 6955 /
2000-6741/2630-6700/3100-6530/3240 to 6500
/3600. The concentration within 40 miles off
consisted of slush, brash and block, — beyond
40 miles of small and medium floes. Distance
of ice edge from Straumnes is 110 miles.
9/12 The pack boundary was observed by
radar from 6505/3715 to 6607/3445 to 6540/3230
to 6715/2600 to 6830/2200. The concentration
from K. Dalton to K. Coster 2/io af brash and
block ancl 7/i0 of puddles. From K. Coster to
IC. Edvard Holm the concentration was 4/i0
brash and block with scattered small and
medium floes. The boundary within 10 miles
of the coast consisted of field and floes.
A strip of small and medium floes were ob-
served from 6610/2800 to 6800/2215 with scat-
tered bergs.
16/12 The pack boundary extended from K.
Greg to 7000/1840 to 6800/2400 to 6715/3025
