JÓN EYTHÓRSSON Report on Sea Ice off the Icelandic Coasts, Oct. 1955-Sept. 1956 The Icelandic coasts were practically jree of sea ice throughout the period, but a consider- able nurnber of single icebergs and small floes were observed near the northern coasts during summer. Distances are given in nautical miles. OCTOBER 1955. Tlie ice belt at tlie Greenlarid coast south of Scoresbysund is only 20—30 miles wide and its distance from Straumnes between 130 and 140 miles. On 7 October the pack boundary was from 6850/2400 (K. Turner) to 6835/2510 to 6808/ 2430 to 6815/2650 to 6815/2800 to Kap Edvard Holm. The concentration within the area con- sisted of 0—s/io brash ancl block with many bergs, bergy bits and growlers. Many bergs were seen down to 65° N. Three icebergs were sighted off the north- western coasts of Iceland. NOVEMBER 1955. The ice belt along the Greenland Coast had become 60 á 70 miles wide. Its average distance from. Straumnes was 110 miles witli nearest ap- proach of 90 miles. 4/n The pack boundary was observed from 6915/2200 to 6732/2735 to 6810/2900 to 6728/ 3000 til K. Hammer to Iv. Edvard Holm to 6645/3245 to Nigertussoq. The concentration north of K. Hammer consisted of 2/10 young ice. Many bergy bits and growlers were seen within the pack boundary throughout the entire area. A big iceberg at 6530/2800. n/n The ice boundary was observed by radar from Kap Brewster to 6925/2000—6654/ 3245 to K. Gustav Holm. — The concentration from Brewster to Nansens Fjorcl consisted of s/io coverage puddle ice 10 miles offshore. Many bergs and growlers were seen throughout the entire area from Brewster to K. Edvard Holm. 20/n The pack boundary Was extending from 6940/2112-7000/1930-6915/1930-6655 /3000 to K. Hammer. From K. Edvard Holm to 6638/ 3100 to 6500/3600. The concentration within the limits S of Edv. Holm consisted of i/io coverage of small bergs, bergy bits and growlers. North of K. Hammer to 70 N the coverage was °/io brash and block, and throughout the en- tire area few bergs and growlers were observed. Coastal reports: From 4-23/n a big block or iceberg was reported in the northern portion of Hunafloi. 22-27/n a big strip of brash, block and bergs was observed at 6700/2330. 21/u a big iceberg about 2 miles ENE of Cape North. The next day it strandecl at the Lighthouse Látravík. DECEMBER 1955. The average distance of the ice edge from Straumnes about 100 miles with nearest approach of 85 miles. Scattered floes were ob- served some 65 miles off Straumnes. 2/i2 Pack boundary observed along the east coast of Greenland from K. Brewster to 6955 / 2000-6741/2630-6700/3100-6530/3240 to 6500 /3600. The concentration within 40 miles off consisted of slush, brash and block, — beyond 40 miles of small and medium floes. Distance of ice edge from Straumnes is 110 miles. 9/12 The pack boundary was observed by radar from 6505/3715 to 6607/3445 to 6540/3230 to 6715/2600 to 6830/2200. The concentration from K. Dalton to K. Coster 2/io af brash and block ancl 7/i0 of puddles. From K. Coster to IC. Edvard Holm the concentration was 4/i0 brash and block with scattered small and medium floes. The boundary within 10 miles of the coast consisted of field and floes. A strip of small and medium floes were ob- served from 6610/2800 to 6800/2215 with scat- tered bergs. 16/12 The pack boundary extended from K. Greg to 7000/1840 to 6800/2400 to 6715/3025 to 6500/3400. The concentration off the pack boundary was 4/10 slush, brash and block with a total coverage of !/i0 throughout the entire 47
