The Icelandic Coastal Guard macle 18 ice
flights in Ihis month, but mostly without a
radar. — The ice limits remained very close to
the northern and eastern coasts for most of the
period but got gradually more open, although
coastal sailing was still very difficult. The drift
ice off the eastern coast disintegrated about
April 20, althoug some of the fjords remained
packed until May. Open icater or very scatter-
ed brash and blocks was often found around
Grimsey and to the North of that island prob-
ably indicating a gap between the icedrift of
the E-Greenland and t.he E-Iceland currents.
The ice conditions are indicated on the map
of April 13 and April 30, while only a few single
reports are quoted below.
4/é All the harbours of Strandir are still ice-
bound.
14/4 Tlie sailing route by Cape Horn is
blocked and the Húnaflói filled with ice.
21/4 The sailing route by Cape Horn and
Cape Langanes is blocked and scattered clrift
ice is reaching Hvalbakur off the E-coast at
65°35' N.
22/4 The harbour of Höfdakaupstadur
(Skagaströnd) and Raufarhöfn still icebound.
28/4 Sailing is possible at Cape Horn, but
inside Cape Gjögur all fjords are filled with
ice. It is, however, possible to sail from Gjögur
to Skallarif ancl further to Rifstangi. The
main ice limits are about 15 miles N of Grímsey.
29/4 The ice island Arlis II was situated NW
of Cape Straumnes at a distance of ab. 80
nautical miles.
MAY 1965
The ice limits are gradually receding from
the northern coasts and are reaching a normal
position at the end of period. At the begin of
the month the ice edge is very close to Cape
Straumnes, but on May 10 the distance is 50
miles.
