total number of persons in these families amounted to 617, which is the minimum
as it is not certain that this fact is always mentioned. To these may be added
the 394 vagrant beggars which brings the total number of paupers up to 7 800
or 15,5 percent of the total population. According to a census of paupers in 1920—21,
the total number of paupers amounted to 4,8 percent of the population, but the
ratio has sunk considerably since and will presumably fall into insignificance.
In Table 9 in Summary is shown the number of paupers in eacb district, both
in absolute figures and percent of population. The number of paupers apportioned
among the households shows very great differences between the various districts
in proportion to population, ranging from 3 percent in the lowest district to 23 %
percent in the higbest.
There are also very great differences in number of paupers according to age
groups, as shown in the summary on page 24. One half of the paupers apportioned
among the bousebolds were under 20 years. Among children and adolescents from
5 to 20 the proportion of paupers is very higli, from 18 to 24 percent of the wbole
number, wbich indicates that it was a common occurrence for prolific families to
break up with tbe children coming on the parish.
Other characteristics of the population. The relationship of the members of
housebold to the head of it is stated in the census with great exactness. A summary
of this subject is given in Table VIII A. Table VIII C contains a great number
of cbaracteristics of peoples faihng health. This table shows a very great difference
of treatment in the various districts so that there is no doubt that in some districts
this matter has been very exaggerated, perhaps for fear of taxes or other burdens
residting from the census. Table VIII D contains some other characteristics oc-
curring in the census.

La unua popolnombrado en Islando okazis en la jaro 1703, kaj gi ampleksis
la tutan logantaron, car ciu persono estis enskribita kun nomo, ago kaj pozicio
en la hejmo. Kvankam gi ne povas pretendi esti la unua generala popolnom-
brado laú nuntempa speco, gi ne liavas multajn rivalojn, kaj estas tre
rimarkinda afero, ke la tuta materialo tiel bone konservigis al nia tempo,
ke ne mankas informoj pri unu sola paroKeto.
La popolnombrado estis efektivigita de komitato, kiu devis funde esplori
la tutan situacion de la lando, car je la fino de 17a jarcento la ekonomiaj
kondicoj de la islanda popolo estis tre mizeraj, ne nur pro severa komerca
monopolo, sed ankaú pro neordinaraj naturkatastrofoj.
La popolnombrado okazis dum la tempo de decembro 1702 gis junio
