Zum Kompositionstypus mannskratti
[N SEINER Behandlung islándischer Komposita weist Professor
Of the Icelandic types that are not found in English only one shall be
mentioned, because it is very frequent in colloquial speech. Formally, it
looks like grjót-garður stone wall, or kirkju-staður parsonage, that is,
it is composed of two nouns. But it is really the second element (noun)
which modifies the first in the type mannskratti deuce of a fellow. It is
a type very expressive of emotions: it is used in terms of scolding, dis-
paraging, invective, hut also in terms of condescending, pitying, and
even endearment and petting.
Auch in den Wörterbuchern von Sigfús Blöndal und Cleasby-Vig-
fússon finden sich Hinweise auf den Typus mannskratti. In der
Definition von tetur heisst es bei Sigfús Blöndal:3 „föjet til Substan-
tiver som et Slags Diminutivendelse, hvorved disse forandres til
Kælenavne.“ Zu korn bei Cleasby-Vigfússon:4 „in modern usage
