Þegar tekið er tillit til hinna óvæntu galla og þeirrar staðreyndar, að skrifaði
textinn fremst og aftast er einskis virði, get ég ekki greitt þau 75 pund, sem sett eru
upp. Þess í stað legg ég hér með 65 punda ávísun - upphæð, sem fer langt fram úr
því, sem fá mætti fyrir eintakið, nema alveg sérstaklega stæði á, á bókamarkaði hvar í
heiminum sem væri. Ég vil ekki standa í vegi fyrir betri sölu, ef hennar er kostur.
Séuð þér því ekki ánægðir með þennan hátt á málum og þér kjósið að endursenda
ávísunina, sendi ég yður samstundis eintakið (tryggt fyrir sömu upphæð og tiltekin
var, þegar þér senduð mér það).

Dear Sira Matthías:
It was a delight to receive such a good letter from you, and it is a
greater delight to learn through the public press that you still
continue to do good service to Icelandic literature. I need not say that
I take joy in reading everything that comes from your pen, and hope
that you may continue for many years to give such great pleasure to
so many people. It seems to me that you have laid a very solid
foundation for the building up of an Icelandic dramatic literature.
I shold greatly enjoy a visit to Akureyri, and a long call upon you. I
have the most pleasant recollections of the place, and my memories of
it are very vivid. From the photographs which I have I see how much
it has grown, especially what a tremendous town Oddeyri has
become. It is good to feel that the growth of this town is not an
isolated instance, but that all the Island is entering upon a period of
increase and prosperity.
You will see by this letter that, although I cannot visit you, I can at
least bore you with many questions. I enclose a list of queries to
which I should very much like the post-master at Akureyri to furnish
replies. Perhaps the best way would be to ask him to answer them
verbally, and get some intelligent young man to write out his
