SUMMARY The Submerued Peat in Seltjörn by Sigurdur Thorarinsson. Submerged peat along the coast of the inner part of Faxaflói lias been known for centuries and is mentioned in the literature for the first time in 1746. It has been studied especially by G. G. Bárdarson, who regarded the occurrence of this peat as a proof of a landsinking in late Postglacial Tirne. His opinion has been accepted by those who have later discussed this pro- blem, with the exception of T. Einarsson, who has argued against it and maintained that this peat is no proof of submergence. In spite of the role the submerged peat has played in the discussion on the shore line development in SW Iceland, no microscopic study of this peat has been carried out until now, nor lias anything been known with certainty about its age.
