Síðan á 7. áratugnum hafa margir jöklar gengið fram vegna þess að tíð hefur verið þeim hagstæðari en næstu fjóra áratugina þar á undan. Þess er Sólheima- jökull best dæmi, en hann hopaði réttan kílómetra frá 1930-1970 eða 25 m á ári að jafnaði. Mest var það um 100 m á einu ári á 4. áratugnum, en þá voru sumur hlýrra hér á landi en annan tíma. Síðan 1970 hefur jökuljaðarinn skriðið áfram að jafnaði 13,5 m á ári samtals 350 m mest um 50 m á einu ári. Hinir svo kölluðu framhlaupsjöklar eru áberandi stórtækari í sínum aðgerðum. A löngu árabili taka þeir mikið stökk fram á við og eftir tíðarfari frá næstu framrás þar á undan ganga þeir skemur eða lengra fram en þá. Til þessara framhlaupsjökla teljast frem- stir hinir flötu og breiðu útskæklar Vatnajökuls, Brúarjökull, Dyngjujökull, Tungnaárjökull, og Síðu- jökull. Þessir eru að vísu um margt ólíkir en eiga þó þennan þátt allir í ríku mæli. Mikið flug hefur verið á íslenskum jöklum nú um árabil. Kunnir framhlaupsjöklar á landinu sem hafa ruðst fram undanfarin 5 ár eru: Skeiðarárjökull, Þjórsárjökull, Köldukvíslarjökull, Múlajökull, Slét- tjökull í Mýrdalsjökli, Síðujökull, Tungnaárjökull, Drangajökull í Leirufirði og Kaldalóni og nú síðast Sylgjujökull. SURGE OF TUNGNAÁRJÖKULL OUTLET GLACIER The front page photograph is of Tungnaárjökull surging. In the summer 1990 some narrow crevasses were noticed in the accumulation area of the glacier. Measurements of the Science Institute of the Univer- sity of Iceland showed that the glacier was continu- ously picking up speed for the next 4 years. The surge broke the terminus in October 1994 and continued for the next 10 months advancing 1.2 km beyond the for- mer position. Maximum speed was 10 m per day. A surge wave racing down the glacier was not observed here like in Síðujökull the year before probably be- cause the glacier has to move across several mountain ridges with relieve of half the thickness of the glacier. Hence also, the maximum speed was only 1/10 of the speed of Síðujökull. Tungnaárjökull is a pure surge type glacier. Its last surge was in 1945-1946. During the quiescent period the terminus retreated continuously without interrup- tion 3 km. This surge does therefore indicate a sub- stantial loss of mass during the period only gaining a little over 1/3 of the ground lost in half a century. 2 JÖKULL, No. 44
