Brottfallið í neyslukönnuninni verður að teljast mikið.
Mikið brottfall getur skekkt niðurstöður könnunar ef brott-
fallshópurinn er frábrugðinn þeim sem tekur þátt í henni. Þeir
sem neituðu þátttöku voru spurðir sömu spurninga um
heimilishagi sína og þeir sem samþykktu að taka þátt í
könnuninni. Þetta var gert til að unnt væri að sjá hvort það
væru ákveðnir hópar sem höfnuðu þátttöku og unnt væri að
leiðrétta niðurstöður með tilliti til þess. Af þeim heimilum
sem vildu ekki taka þátt í neyslukönnuninni voru rúmlega
75% fús til að svara spurningum um heimilishagi sína.
Upplýsingar úr þjóðskrá voru notaðar til þess að áætla stærð
og gerð þeirra heimila sem neituðu að svara spurningum um
heimilishagi sína, heimili sem ekki náðist í og nokkur heimili
sem ekki luku þátttöku í könnuninni. Heimilisstærð og -gerð
var áætluð út frá upplýsingum í þjóðskrá fyrir 311 heimili. Til
að meta hugsanlega skekkju í þessari aðferð var síðan tekið
úrtak 228 heimila sem svöruðu spumingum um heimilishagi
í neyslukönnuninni og svör þeirra um heimilishagi borin
saman við áætlun um sömu atriði samkvæmtþjóðskrá. Niður-
staðan var sú að ágætt samræmi var milli heimilisgerða
samkvæmt ney slukönnun og áætlaðra heimilisgerða samkvæmt
þjóðskrá. Mestu munaði íheimilisgerðinni hjónog sambýlisfólk
án bama vegna þess að fólk skráir oft ekki óvígða sambúð í
þjóðskrá.
Sundurliðun á svörun í neyslukönnuninni eftir búsetu og
heimilisgerð er sýnd í 5. og 6. yfirliti. Alls neituðu 1.004
heimili að taka þátt í könnuninni. A höfuðborgarsvæðinu
neituðu 647 heimili þátttöku eða 38%. A þéttbýlisstöðum
utan höfuðborgarsvæðis höfnuðu 233 heimili þátttöku eða
34,5%. í dreifbýli neituðu 124 heimili þátttöku eða 37,7%.
Hlutfall neitana virðist því hafa verið svipað eftir búsetu.
Heimili utan höfuðborgarsvæðis virtust síður ljúka þátttöku
í könnuninni en heimili á höfuðborgarsvæðinu.
The non-response rate in the survey must be considered
high. A large non-response rate can cause an error in the
survey findings if the non-respondents differ from those who
participated. Those who refused to participate were asked the
same questions about their household background as those
who agreed to take part, in order to be able to establish
whether specific groups refused to take part so that the results
could be adjusted accordingly. Of the households refusing to
take part, more than 75% were prepared to answer questions
about their household background. Information from the
National Register was used to estimate size and type among
households which either refused to answer about their back-
ground, could not be contacted or did not complete the
survey. Size and type of 311 households were estimated on
the basis of information in the National Register. In order to
measure the conceivable error inherent in this method, a sub-
sample of 228 households which had answered questions
about their background was then drawn from the survey, and
their answers compared with an estimate of the same factors
according to the National Register, which yielded a good
correspondence between results. The greatest difference in
household type was among couples without children, be-
cause it is common for people not to register cohabitation in
the National Register.
A breakdown of responses in the survey according to place
of residence and type of household is shown in Summaries 5
and 6. Of the total 1,004 household refusing to take part in the
survey, 647 were in the capital area (38% of all households
selected there). In towns outside the capital area, 223 house-
holds refused to take part, or 34.5% of those sampled there.
Another 124 households (37.7%) refused to take part in other
communities. The proportion of refusals therefore seems to
have been similar irrespective of place of residence.
