32 ÍSLENZKAR LANDBÚNAÐARRANNSÓKNIR SUMMARY Seasonal variation of selenium in the blood of sheep. Experiment at Hvanneyri in 1980 Guðný Eiríksdóttir Baldur Símonarson and Þorsteinn Þorsteinsson Institute of Experimental Pathology Keldur, Reykjavík, Bjarni Guðmundsson and JÓN VlÐAR JÓNMUNDSSON Hvanneyri. The selenium status in ewes during pregnancy was investigated at the ex- perimental farm at the Agricultural Col- lege at Hvanneyri 1979—1980. The ewes were fed silage or hay, both groups re- ceiving supplementary feeding (cereal based conceutrecter) in spring and half of the ewes received supplementation during the mating season. There was no difference GPx activities between the two groups. This decrease during pregn- ancy was greater than in rams where GPx activity in March was 112 IU/g Hb and 102 IU/g Hb in May. After grazing highland pastures during the summer GPx activities in the blood of the ewes increased to 140 IU/g Hb. The selenium concentration determin- ed in feed samples taken during the indoor feeding season was always less than 80 ng/g except in the April hay sample. Total selenium in the feed was increased by supplementation, but addition during the mating season had no influence on GPx activities during pregnancy. enium and its relation to vitamin E. Fed.
