1. The climatic conditions
The climatic conditions were relatively favourable most of the year except in April when it
was unusually cold all over the country. The mean temperature was 0.9° C below the average.
The precipitation was below the average except in the north-eastem and southem part of the
country.
2. Population. Births and deaths
The lst ofDecember 1988 the population oflceland was 251,690(1987 : 247,357).The
population of Reykjavík was 95,811 (1987 : 93,425). The estimated midyear population was
249,885 (1987:245,962).
The marriage rate was 5.2 (1987 : 4.7), the live birth rate was 18.7 (1987 : 17.0) and the
death rate was 7.3 (1987 : 7.0) per 1000 inhabitants. The infant mortality rate was 6.2 (1987 :
7.2) per 1000 bom alive. The perinatal death rate was 7.5 (1987 : 8.3).

4. Infective and parasitic diseases.
The incidence of infective and parasitic diseases in 1988 is shown in tables II and III.
The table shows the incidence of infective and parasitic diseases and deaths from each
disease. Diseases of which there have been no cases for the last ten years are not included in
this table.
