What is your first queer memory?
Seeing the music video for t.A.T.u.’s “All
The Things She Said” on TRL and then
immediately asking my dad to drive
me to the local CD store so I could buy
their album. I was nine then and didn’t
realise at that time why I liked it so
much…

I also strongly remember Kim Stolz
on America’s Next Top Model in 2005.
She was no doubt the first lesbian I
saw on TV and her whole storyline
has stuck with me to this day. Also, I’d
like to give a shout out to Libba Bray’s
Gemma Doyle trilogy. Not to spoil
anything, but there’s a queer romance
in it that I still credit for making me
realise that perhaps being queer
could be beautiful. I used to read and
reread it just because I related to this
character in some nebulous way. Now I
understand why.

Who is your biggest queer role
model?
Otep Shamaya from the nu-metal
band OTEP. She was the first queer
person I ever saw myself in and I’d
listen to her albums obsessively as a
young teen. She was outwardly and
unapologetically gay and politically
radical and I was so in awe of her. I’m
still in awe of her! I wish I was buff as
hell and could write rap metal like her. (I
hope she’s in Iceland randomly for Pride
and sees this and contacts me omg)

Check out “Warhead” for the best anti-
Iraq War anthems of all time, “Shelter
In Place” for some righteous anti-NRA
anger and also “Apex Predator” for the
sexiest wlw song of all time. And of
course, “Equal Rights, Equal Rights” is a
given, as it coined the iconic lyric, “Let’s
get one thing straight: I’m not.”

How do you participate in the queer
community?
I am the drag artist HANS, the reigning
Drag King of Iceland! I like to wear
Saran Wrap and roll around onstage to
industrial music. I also like to sing show
tunes.
