Kveðja frá forseta Skáksambands Islands
One of the life lessons that we try to teach children
learning how to play chess is to always build on their
strengths and not their weaknesses.
This is how I sometimes think of the Icelandic tradition
of chessplaying: Our rich history of chess in Iceland is
a part of our strength, and it is a sign of weakness to
neglect it. We do not alway realize it — at times things
are booming and at another time they are in disarray
— but no one can deny that the history of chess with our
tiny population is quite phenomenal. It is our duty to
continue to enrich this history.
The Reykjavik International Chess Festival 2008
weaves together a colourful tapestry. The highlight this
time around is perhaps not only what happens on the
chessboard, but also what happens when a few good
people come together on Bobby Fischer's Birthday, 9
March.
The words and wisdom of the remarkable grandmasters
and contemporaries of Fischer, who now gather together
in Iceland to honour their fallen comrade - Spassky,
Lombardy, Benkö, Hort, Portisch and Friðrik - really
says most of what that needs to be said. They cared
for Fischer, some for years and others for decades.
They all speak of him highly and fondly. They want to
remember him and honour him, not mereiy as a genius
of chess, but also as a good friend and an honest soul. I
would like to use this opportunity to express my sincere
condolences to Fischer's widow, Miyoko Watai. Blessed
be the memory of Bobby Fischer.
For some, the most exquisite and powerful means of
expression is music, for others math and for yet others
language. The purest thoughts and creations of Bobby
Fischer — and indeed those of many others who are here
today — came when playing chess. There, we find a
source of strength and originality which will continue to
inspire many generations to come. And, if we are lucky,
a hint of such inspiration will be found at the Reykjavik
International Chess Festival 2008.
I would like to thank all those who have supported the
Icelandic Chess Federation in this ambitious project.
Of these, I would above like to mention the City of
Reykjavik and Glitnir Bank, without whom none of this
would have been possible.
Eitt af því sem við reynum að kenna börnum sem eru að
læra að tefla er að byggja á styrkieikum sfnum á borðinu.
Þannig hugsa ég stundum um íslenska skákhefð: hún er
einn af styrkleikum okkar Islendinga. Við gerum okkur
ekki alltaf grein fyrir því, og stundum er hæð og stundum
er lægð, en það getur hins vegar engum dulist að saga
skáklistarinnar á íslandi er mögnuð. Það er skylda okkar
að byggja á slíkri sögu og halda í heiðri.
Með alþjóðlegu skákhátíðinni f Reykjavík í ár tvinnum
við saman ólíka þræði og ólík skákmót jafnt sem
stefnumót. Hápunkturinn í skákhátíðinni að þessu sinni
er ekki einungis hvað gerist á skákborðinu, heldur hverjir
koma saman þann 9. mars 2008, á afmælisdegi Bobbys
heitins Fischer.
Orð og andi þeirra merku skákmeistara og
samferðarmanna Fischers sem koma nú saman á íslandi til
að heiðra sinn fallna félaga — Spassky, Lombardy, Benkö,
Hort, Portisch og Friðrik - segir í raun allt sem segja þarf.
Þeim þótti vænt um Fischer, þeir tala einstaklega vel um
hann, þeir vilja minnast hans og heiðra, ekki bara sem
skákmeistara og snillings, heldur einnig sem góðs vinar
og hreinskiptinnar sálar. Eg vil nýta tækifærið hér til að
votta ekkju Fischers, Miyoko Watai, mínar innilegustu
samúðarkveðjur. Blessuð sé minning Bobbys Fischer.
Besti og kröftugasti tjáningarmáti sumra er tónlist,
annarra stærðfræði og enn annarra tungumálið. Tærustu
hugsanir Fischers, og tærustu hugsanir svo ótal margra
annarra, komu fram í gegnum taflmennsku. Þar er á
ferðinni styrkur og frumleiki sem um ókomna tíð mun
veita fólki innblástur. Vonandi mun brot af slíkum
innblæstri svífa yfir vötnum á hátíðinni í ár.
Ég þakka öllum þeim sem gerðu þessa hátíð mögulega
og hafa staðið við bakið á Skáksambandi Islands í
þessu metnaðarfulla verkefni. Þar ber fyrst að nefna
Reykjavíkurborg og Glitni, en án stuðnings og skilnings
þessara aðila hefði engin alþjóðleg skákhátíð í Reykjavík
árið 2008 verið möguleg.
