Report on Sea Ice off the Icelandic Coasts, Oct. 1957-Sept. 1958
The Icelanclic coasts were free of drift ice
throughout the period. Several single icebergs
and belts of drift ice were sightecl from the
northwestern promontoriés especially in May
and June.
Distances are given in nautical miles.
OCTOBER 1957.
A few icebergs were reported at different
positions between 66° 25' ancl 67° N and 20°
and 21° 30' W.
i/io A big iceberg sighted to the W of Kol-
beinsey at 6701/2101.
10/io Three big icebergs about 6638/2056.
is/io Two icebergs about 6635/2028.
18/io From Hraun á Skaga: One big and 2
or 3 smaller icebergs observed ca. 8—10 miles
N of the lighthouse. These bergs are repeat-
edly reported by ships about the position 6625/
2040 until the end of November.
NOVEMBER 1957.
Some scattered clrift ice and a few icebergs
were reported off the northwestern coasts of
Iceland.
2/ii Two icebergs were sighted about 24
miles WNW of the Skagatá lighthouse. The
same blocks seem to remain about pos. 6620/
2120 until the 28th of the month.
2/n A big floe sighted ab. 18 miles NE of
Cape Horn.
14/u M/g Þorsteinn Ingólfsson reports: An
unbroken iceedge from 6640/2500 to 6656/2310.
14/n M/s Haflidi, 1645 z: A continuous ice
edge extending to WNW from a position 19
miles ENE magnetic off Cape Horn.
16/n A big iceberg sighted 7 miles ENE of
the Gjögur lighthouse. The same block is re-
ported in the vicinity of Gjögur on the 19th
and 27th of the month.
23/n Some scattered drift ice observed ab.
18 miles ofl Cape Straumnes.
27/n M/g Haflidi, 0930 z: A strip of drift ice
sighted ab. 6 miles NE of Cape Horn.
27/ii The lighthouse of Látravík reports: An
ice belt, 1.5—2 miles long, is extending from
WNW to ESE on the sailing route E of Cape
Horn. An iceberg of considerable size is strancl-
ed ab. 2 miles SE of the lighthouse.
DESEMBER 1957.
No ice reports available.
JANUARY 1958.
The average distance of the ice edge from
Cape Straumnes was about 60 miles. Some strips
of drift ice appeared within 10 miles distance
about the middle of the month but receded
quickly.
15/i S/T Akurey: A strip of drift ice sighted
at 6640/2408 ab. 10 miles N of Cape Horn.
le/i M/g Marz: A strip of drift ice sighted
16 miles off Deild (ab. 66° 11' N, 23° 30' W).
i6/i M/g Godafoss 1930 z: An icebelt observ-
ecl by radar 4.5 miles W of Cape Ritur, curving
W-wards at the southern encl but NW-ward at
the northern one.
17/i M/g Askur 1612 z: An icebelt sighted ab.
6609/2523 (45 miles off Cape Bardi). Extending
as far as sighted towarcl W ancl E.
19/i TF-ISN (Gullfaxi) en route for Green-
land: A belt of drift ice 35 miles 340° true
off Cape Horn. The fast ice began 40 miles off
Cape Horn extending as far as sighted to SW
and N.
21/1 TF-ISH en route for Mestersvig in clear
weather: The ice edge was 60 miles N of Cape
Horn. From there is an unbroken ice field to
the mouth of Scoresbysund.
FEBRUARY 1958.
The distance of the ice boundary from Cape
Straumnes was about 100 miles in the latter
half of the month.
