22/2 The ice edge was observed 150 rniles to
the N of Cape Horn, ab. 70° N and 22° W.
(Reported by Capt. B. Gudmundsson en route
for Mestersvig).
22/2 The boundary of drift ice extending
from 6800/2500 to 6910/2100 to 6940/2000.
Coastal reports of new ice:
11 /2 After a spell of calm and cold weather
considerable new ice has been formed in the
small fjords and around the islands of Breida-
fjördur. The bottom of Gilsfjörclur is covered
by solid ice. The harbours at Brjánslækur, Króks-
fjardarnes and Búdardalur are blocked by ice.
le/2 New ice drifting out of Hvammsfjördur
is causing difficulties to boats in entering the
harbour of Stykkishólmur. Not impeding pas-
sage of trawlers.
MARCH 1958.
The distance of the ice edge from Cape
Straumnes towards the end of the month was
about 90 miles.
8/3 From position 6514/3448 the ice edge
was extending to SSW and NE with concentra-
tion about 5/io- The winter fast ice begins
about 30 miles nearer to the coasts of Green-
land at 6522/3600. (Personal communication
from the Captain of a Danish airplane).
20/3 The ice boundary was extending from
6740/2800 to 6750/2500 to 6800/2400 to 6900/
2200 to 7000/1900 to 7100/1830. The ice con-
sisted of alternate areas of broken and close
drift ice with considerable intervals of open
water.
APRIL 1958.
The average distance from Straumnes was
about 80 miles with nearest approach of 38
miles about the middle of the month.
14/i The ice pack boundary was running
from 6643/2437 to 6700/2325 to 6800/2230 to
6830/2105 to 7040/1830. Four miles wide from
the leading edge the coverage was generally 8/10
consisting in the southern portion mainly of
slush, brash and block, while N of 68° large
floes were predominant.
80/4 The ice boundaries were well defined
between latitudes 66 N and 68 N passing
through the following coordinates: From 6757/
2440 to 6745/2550 to 6705/2610 to 6700/2708
to 6738/2730 to 6725/2845 to 6638/3030 to
6628/2934 to 6620/2945 to 6557/3105.
MAY 1958.
The average distance of the ice edge from
C. Straumnes is estimated to 50 miles with near-
est approach of 25 miles.
