6700/2300 to 6630/2500 to 6550/2630 to 6640/ 2640 (forming a 50 miles long lead) to 6550/ 2700 to 6610/2820 to 6530/3110. Concentration was generally 0.2—0.3 within the boundary, consisting of slush, brash, block and small and medium floes. Fifty percent puddling was ob- served in the areas of 6535/3110 ancl 6555/2940 and seventy percent puddling at 6633/2505 while 40 percent puddling was observed at 6803/2205. The area at 66° 15' N between longitudes 27° to 29° W maintained a concentra- tion of 0.8 with 0.2 slush, brash and block and 0.6 small and medium floes. 5/« From Cape Straumnes an ice field, 30 miles long, 10 miles wide was observecl at 25 miles distance to the N. Another, 20 miles long, 8 miles wide, was 17—18 miles to the NW and the third one, ab. 15 miles long ancl 5 miles wide, was 10—15 miles off in NE. 7/o M/g Ægir 0030 z: An ice field beginning at 6800/2000 is extencling 34 rniles in direction N 80 E true. 8/« M/s Litlafell 0300 z: Passing a number of low icebergs scattered in an area 4—7 miles NE of Cape Horn. 15/g Látravík 0600 z: A big iceberg sighted 10—15 miles NE of the lighthouse. Another berg seems to be stranded 3—4 miles off the coast. !«/o Látravík 1800 z: A big iceberg to the NE, about 3 miles from the coast. drifting rapidly towards west. Another very big iceberg is seen ESE of the lighthouse, 10—12 miles off the coast. 17/o Látravik 1800 z: One of the icebergs re- ported yesterday is strancled ab. 2 miles ENE from the Iighthouse. A lot of berg)r bits are drifting about the sailing route off Cape Horn. 20/o M/g Jökulfell 1905 z: Two big icebergs respectively 1 and 6 miles off Cape Horn. A mediurn floe was sighted 13 miles ESE of Cape Horn at 1930 gmt. 27/« The outer boundary of the ice was runn- ing from 7000/1900 to 6830/2130 to 6800/2040 to 6745/2100 to 6800/2145 to 6720/2530. Con- centration was ranging from 0.8 off Cape Brewster in the north to 0.3 to 0.6 in the south. JULY 1958. No reports of ice off the. Icelandic coasts received. AUGUST 1958. 5/8 A big ice block sighted at 6650/2343. Dangerous to navigation. 21/8 M/g Svalbakur 1900 z: A big iceberg at 6523/2600. SEPTEMBER 1958. Distance of drift. ice from Cape Straumnes 100—120 miles. 3/9 One iceberg sighted at 6535/3200. 5/g Thirty icebergs within 20 miles off posi- tion 6518/3648. 2«/9 Aircraft TF-IST reports ice edge 27 miles S of C. Brewster, then open water for several miles. The outermost limits of ice 43 miles off C. Brewster. Concentration 0.5 to 0.6 near the coast but 0.3 to 0.4 farther out. Skarðatindur í Öræfum klifinn Innst á rananum milli Morsárjökuls og Skaftafellsjökuls í Öræfum rís Skarðatindur. Þótt hæð hans yfir sjó sé ekki meiri en 1385 m er þetta mjög reisulegur tindur og næsta erfið- ur uppgöngu. Þann 13. ágúst 1954 klifu tveir brezkir stú- dentar, J. A. Exley og M. Meller, Skarðatind. Þeir lögðu upp úr Morsárdal kl. 9.15, klifu tindinn frá norðaustri og urðu að nota bönd á dálitlum kafla. Á hátindinn komust þeir kl. 13.40. Samkvæmt upplýsingum Ragnars St.efáns- sonar í Skaftaíelli mun þetta vera í fyrsta skipt- ið, sem Skarðatindur er klifinn. 29
