SUMMARY The Common (loldeneye (Bucephala clangula) in Iceland, with notes on identification by Arnthor Gardarsson, Museum of Natural Histoiy, Rcykjavík. 1. Earlier reports in the literature regarding Bucephala clangula in Iceland are rather misleading and sorne of these occurrences liave not been adequately described in print. In this paper all records of the species, including a num- ber of new ones, have been compiled. 2. Series of B. clangula and li. islandica in tlie Museum of Natural History in Reykjavík and the Museum of Vertebrate Zoology, Berkeley, California, as well as a few skins from the U. S. National Museum in Washington, were examined in order to find a reliable method of separating young or females of the two species in the hand. The width of the nail relative to that of the bill at the anterior angle of the nostrils was found to separate all fullgrown birds (Fig. 1), the downy yonng may sliow a slight overlap in this ratio. In fully grown islandica the width of the nail is over 42% of the billwidth at
