THE FINNISH MEDICAL ASSOCIATION
Over 96 per cent of all the
qualified doctors in Finland be-
long to the Finnish Medical As-
sociation. The majority of those
who are not members of tlie
Association are either ahroad
or, owing to age or sickness,
do not practise medicine.
Thus, it is clear that the Fin-
nish medical profession is very
strongly represented by the Fin-
nish Medical Association. It is
an effective trade union of
physieians, with an extremely
wide field of activity. As a unit-
ed body of Finnish physicians,
tlie ohject of tlie Association is
to preserve the spirit of dignity
and good fellowsliip among the
medical profession of the coun-
try, watch over tlie social and
economic interests of the doc-
lors and also to promote scien-
tific and social pursuits and
other professional enterprises
generally. Tlie advancement of
the care of health and sickness
in Finland is also among the
objects of the Association.
In order to achieve its aims
and objecls the Association en-
gages in the publication of ma-
terial, arranges meetings, lec-
tures and discussions, issues
statements and makes proposals
to tlie authorities, represents the
Finnish medical profession in
its relations with otlier profes-
sional bodies and with foreign
medical oganizations, and takes
measures designed to further
the connnon endeavours of the
medical profession and to keep
a careful watcli over its other
interests of a nature similar to
those mentioned above.
Tlie administration of the As-
sociation is carried out by its
Committee, comprising 40
members, the elections to wliich
occur every third year; every
member of the Association lias
tlie right to participate in tliese
elections. Participation in the
elections over recent times lias
shown a percentage of slightly
over 55.
The executive organ is the
Administrative Board of the
Association, comprising a Chair-
man, Vice-Chairman and seven
members. The present Chair-
man of the Board of Adminis-
tration of tlie F.M.A. is Sur-
geon-in-Cliief to the Finnish Air
Force, Docent M. J. Karvonen,
Lecturer in Physiology. The
