JON EYTHORSSON:
Report on Sea Ice off the Icelandic Coasts in Oct. 1953-Sept. 1954
Tlie Icelandic Coasts were free of Sea ice
throughout the period Oct.—Sept. 1953/54. No
significant dril't ice came within sight from
coastal stations. Shipping along the coasts
was never impeded by drift ice or winter
fast ice.
Distances are given in nautical miles.
OCTOBER 1953.
The average distance of the ice edge from
S t r a u m n e s 130 miles, the nearest approach
about 120 miles.
2/io Ice was observed along the coast of
Greenland from 6830/2630 to 6910/2400 (==
68° 30' N, 26° 30' W to 69° 10' N, 24° 0' W).
°/io The extreme Easterly position of the ice
floe was seen at 6500/3300. Farther North along
the coast of Greenland ice was observed all the
way to Kap Brewster, 7000/2130.
is/,o An iceberg sighted about 15 miles ENE
of Cape Horn, drifting toward E.
16/io Heavy ice ancl numerous bergs were
observed along the coast of Greenland from
6845/2500 to 7010/2208. The water was esti-
mated to be unnavigable for 25—30 miles off-
shore N of 68° 45'. The frequency of bergs in
this offshore area was abont one per square
mile. The surface of Scoresbysund was freez-
ing over.
17/io Scattered ice observed at at 6600/2642.
A stranded iceberg at 81 m depth, 6641/2223.
18/io Three icebergs sighted 2—8 miles to the
E of the lighthouse at Cape Horn.
20/,0 An iceberg sighted 4 miles ENE of Geir-
olfsnúpur.
23/io Scattered ice extended 40 miles out
from the Greenland coast between 6533/3700
and 7008/2205. A large iceberg, aboutt 250 feet
high, was seen at 6522/3535.
gp/io Scattered ice extending 50 miles out
from the coast of Greenland from K. Barclay
to K. Ussing.
NOVEMBER 1953.
The distance of the ice edge from S traum -
nes about 110 mites.

6/io Scattered ice with occasional large ice-
bergs tvas extending out 40 miles from the
Greenland Coast frorn K. Beaupre to K. Dan.
13/n Consolidated ice extended out for ap-
proximately 50 miles from the Greenland coast
to 6728/2850 and 6804/2400. A large ice floe
was observed in the area bouncled by 6825/2245,
6910/2345 and 6830/2545. Numerous icebergs
were extending out as far as 37 miles from the
coast between Iv. Dan and K. Edvard Holm.
27/n Broken ice with brash was extending
60 miles out from the Greenland coast between
K. Dan ancl K. Edvard Holm. One iceberg,
200 ft. high, was sighted at 6625/2730.
DECEMltER 1953.
The distance of the ice edge from S t r a u m -
nes about 100 miles.
■*/12 Consolidated ice was extending 50 miles
from the Greenland Coast between K. Dan and
K. Brewster witli scattered ice as far as 70 miles ^
offshore.
23/12 A drifting iceberg sighted 118°—120°
off Cape Horn at 220 meters depth.
24/i2 The ice edge is extending from 6800/-
2500 to 6830/2200 to 6920/2000. Coverage about
7/io towards K. Brewster where consolidated
ice with scattered icebergs was observed. A big
open lead off K. Brewster, but Scoresbysund
covered with unbroken and almost clear winter
ice.
27i2 A 99 percent concentration of ice
(blocks, brash, pancakes and slush) was obser-
ved for approx. 45 miles off the Greenland
coast from K. Dan to K. Gustav Holm. Nume-
rous icebergs were breaking off glaciers at the
latter point and many were located 5—15 miles
offshore. Fjords were covered with clear ice.
