Bergs were sighted at 6812/2530 and 6842/2430.
Another iceberg at 6700/2500 was noted to be
exceptionally large.
9/7 Drift ice sighted about 2 miles NW from
6600/2609 (M/S Ægir).
11 /7 The ice edge is extending E—W at 6732/-
2454 (M/S Ægir).
21/7 The ice boundary was extending from
6930/2300 - 6818/2400 - 6548/3000 - 6512/-
3200 — 6412/3254. Concentration of 7/io, most-
ly brash ancl small floe, existed from 6900/2400
— 6748/2748. Concentration of 3/10 small floe
was observed at 6600/3300. Observations were
scattered.
23 /7 A big growler sighted at 6650/2100
(M/S Ægir).
28/t Ice boundary extending from 7000/2030
- 6900/2130 - 6730/2600 - 6742/3100 - 6548/-
3200. Ice concentrations e/io to 9/io from K.
Brewster to 30 miles south of K. Vedel, mostly
brash and block. From this latter position S
only 2/io brash and block was observed. Bergs
were sighted at 6830/2100 and 6954/2200 ancl
6854/2500. On 3 August concentrations were
observed as follows: 10/io brasli and small floe
from 6936/2318 to 6912/2430; °/io mostly brash
ancl small floe at 6700/2900; 3/io brash at
6612/3330. Observations were scattered due to
undercast. Many bergs at 6924/2424. One ice-
berg 200 ft at 6724/2618.
AUGUST 1954.
The distance from Straumnes to the
ice edge 130 miles, the nearest approach of drift
ice 60 miles.
10/8 Ice boundary was observed 10 to 30
miles off the Greenland coast from K. Brewster
to 6800/3030; thence clear shore south to K.
Gustav Holm. From K. Gustav Holm to K.
Dan the bounclary was again observed ex-
tending about 20 miles off the coast. Ice con-
centration was 9/io brash and small floe from
7018/2200 to 6900/2500; 3/io mostly brash from
6830/2500 to 6818/2900; 4/io mostly brash
from 6648/3300 to 6548/3600. No icebergs were
observed.
17/g Ice boundary extending from a point
60 miles SE of K. Brewster to 6730/2400 to
6742/2700. Thence to shore at K. Vedel. Ice
concentration was 9/io brash and small floe
from 6924/2012 to coast at 6842/2618; 4/io
mostly brash from 6848/2200 to 6736/2600.
18/g Open drift ice encountered at 6730/-
2318 and ice edge sighted farther N, extending
from NE to SW (M/S Ægir).
23/g The ice boundary assumed to extend
20—30 miles out along the Greenland coast
from K. Beaupre to K. Dan. One iceberg, 150
feet, at 6448/3630 and eiglit bergs at 6648/3148.
30/s Ice bounclary extending from Iv. Tup-
inier to 6720/2420 to 6700/2700. Thence to
the Greenland coast at K. Hammer. Ice con-
centrations within the boundary ranged from
°/io to 8/io coverage brash and block on the
E-ern edge of the boundary and diminished
to 2/io to 4/10 mostly brash along the coast of
Greenland. Large concentrations of bergy bits
and growlers were scattered throughout the area.
Several icebergs were observed from 100 to 250
feet at 6725/2450; 6720/2530; 6755/2855; 6800/-
2500; 6805/3110; 6800/3000 and 6715/2820.
SEPTEMBEll 1954.
Only a small belt of scattered ice along the
Greenland coast.
3/o, Some drift ice sighted about 30 miles NW
of Straumnes and one big iceberg 12 miles
NE of Cape Horn. Two big blocks and some
scattered bits observed ab. 14 miles ESE of Cape
Horn drifting SE.
7/o The ice boundary extended 10 to 30
miles off the Greenland coast from Iv. Dan
to K. Edvard Holm. Thence clear shore N
to K. Brewster. Ice concentrations were 7/10
to 3/io brasli covering entire area. Icebergs up
to 200 feet were observed scattered throughout
the area.
20/0 The ice boundary was extending from
K. Hodgson on the Greenland coast to 6924/-
2218 to 6912/2348 to 6930/2400. Thence clear
shore to K. Dan. An ice field was observed
with a radius of 30 miles at 6530/3612. Ice
concentration was oberved at 7000/2200 con-
sisting of 8/10 brash. Many icebergs were
scattered throughout the entire area.
28/» The ice boundary was observed from
6912/2400 - 6918/2130 - 7000/2142. Ice con-
centration consisted of 4/io brash. Clear shore
was observed from K. Dan to 6900/2400. A
few icebergs were scattered throughout the
area.
