Jökull - 01.12.1954, Síða 46
APRIL 1954.
The position of the ice edge uncertain, but
probably about midways betiveen the NW. coast
of Iceland and Greenland.
4/4 Very little ice off Angmagsalik, only about
15 miles wide zone of drift ice, with big leads.
(TFISE).
5/4 The ice edge is extending from 7000/-
1300 - 7125/1000 - 7130/0900 - 7122/0645 -
7100/0540 - 7100/0430 - 7146/0350 - 7208/-
0200 W - 7230/0000 - 7300/0100 E. Close
polar ice to the W of Jan Mayen while the ice
edge to the NE of the isíand consists of winter
fast ice with long leads. (Norsk Polar Institutt).
ls/4 The ice edge is extending from 7030/-
1230 - 7028/1130 - 7040/1000 - 7115/0800 -
7055/0620 - 7130/0540 - 7047/0430 - 7156/-
0125 W - 7206/0000 - 7300/0150 E. The ice
edge consists of strips ancl ridges of winter ice,
with a few old floes. West of Jan Mayen heavy
pack ice was encountered. (Norsk Polar In-
stitutt).
10/4 The ice bounclary varied from 65 miles
off the Greenlancl coast at 6600/3400 to 110
miles off the coast at Ií. Hammer (6808/3137)
with °/10 concentration of giant floes and
field ice.
-6/i An ice field was observed around Jan
Mayen, extending N an indefinite distance
(but more than 50 miles) and S to 7025/0900.
MAY 1954.
The average distance of ice edge from
Straumnes 100 miles, the nearest approach
about 80 miles.
7/5 The ice boundary was located approx.
100 miles off the Greenland coast, with con-
centration of brash, blocks and íloes to the
W of this line being 8/io and immediately to
the E about B/io-
20_24)g 'j’iie jce boundary was extending
approx. 60 miles off the Greenland coast from
6918/2000 southward to 6730/3018, where it
was only 40 miles offshore. The boundary from
the latter point southward was obscured on 24
May but observed about 100 miles E of Iv.
Gustav Holm on 20 May.
28/5 Ice edge extending 60—90 miles off
Greenland coast from 6840/2000 to 6530/3300.
Heavy sea fog up to 120 miles offshore pre-
vented visual observation of the ice pack.
JUNE 1954.
The average distance of the ice edge frorn
Straumnes 80 miles, the nearest opproach
of ice 45 miles.
8/g The ice edge is situated at 6751/2718
(m/s Ægir).
10/e The ice boundary was extending from
15 miles off the Greenland coast at K. Dan
(6518/3700) to 60 miles off at 6918/2100.
18/o Ice boundary extending from 6900/-
2100 - 6730/2800 - 6700/3018 - 6630/3030
— 6512/3500. Concentration 8/io, mostly small
floes, extended frorn the Northern boundary
to 6800/2700 and from this point S, 4/io con-
centration, mostly brash and block ice.
23/g Ice boundary extending along the con-
tour of the Greenlancl coast at a distance of
70 miles, from K. Brewster to K. Dan, where
it was only 60 rniles offshore. Concentration
-j 10—4/10, generally brash and small floes, ex-
tencled from 6924/2000 to 6830/2430; 7/io
brash block and smali floes frorn this point
to 6742/2730 ancl 4/io to 5/io generally brash
block from 6656/3000 to 6500/3600.
30/0 The ice edge was extending along the
Greenland coast in a very irregular pattern as
follows: From 6448/3606 to 6618/3218 —
6548/3000 - 6606/2900 - 6800/3200 - 6800/-
3124 — 6648/2500 — 6854/2118. Icebergs were
sighted at 6748/2430; 6818/2242; 6830/2600
and 6512/3548. Concentration were 8/io, most-
ly small floe, in the northern sector and 8/i0,
mostly brash and block in the southern area.
On 5 July ice was observed at 6625/2500, °/i0
coverage, mostly brash and block.
JULY 1954.
The average distance of ice edge from
Straumnes about 100 miles, nearest ap-
proach 60 miles.

6630/2900 - 6542/3200 - 6500/3500. Kap
Hammer entrance was observed to be clear.
Ice concentration of 3/i0 to 5/i0 coverage in
the South quarter was mostly brash and small
floe with °/io coverage at 6848/2400 mostly
medium and giant floe. Undercast permitted
scattered observations only. On 13 July the
ice boundary was partially observecl extending
