Summary The 2003 spring expedition of the Iceland Glacio- logical Society took place in the first week of Ju- ne. The number of participants was 26, whereof 6 stayed only part of the time. The route of the expedi- tion was through Jökulheimar and Tungnaárjökull to Grímsvötn, where the hut at Eystri Svíahnúkur was used as a base. The water level at Grímsvötn was measured, and the winter balance in Grímsvötn and at few other places obtained by snow coring. Vari- ous measurements of ice surface elevation changes and ice flowweremade using submeter DGPS, mainly for the purpose of monitoring changes in geothermal activity in Grímsvötn, Gjálp and Skaftárkatlar. Auto- matic weather stations were set up and the inflation of the Grímsvötn caldera monitored by precise GPS geodetic surveying. The small geothermally sustained lake Gengissig in Kverkfjöll at the northern edge of Vatnajökull was surveyed, its depth and volume determined and water temperature measured. The first spring expedition of the Glaciological Society to Vatnajökull took place in June 1953 and these exped- itions have been continued on an annual basis ever since. The fiftieth anniversary was therefore celebra- ted at Jökulheimar on the 7th of June. 76 JÖKULL No. 53, 2003
