RESIDUE OF LINURON IN SOILS 5
MATERIAL AND METHODS
Sampling of soils and potatoes
Fields were selected in all the important
potato growing areas in Iceland (fig. 1).
Eleven fields were chosen in northern
Iceland around Eyjafjördur (area I), 14 in
Thykkvibær in the southern part of the
country where about 40% of the table
potatoes are produced (area II), 2 fields
about 40 km north of Thykkvibær (area
III), 3 fields to the west of Thykkvibær
(area IV) and 2 sites in the south eastern
part of Iceland (area V). Sampels were
therefore taken from 32 fields in total. A
detailed description of the use of linuron is
presented in table 1.
Soil samples were taken íirst at the end of
May 1981, just after setting but before
linuron application. Sampling was per-
formed at at least ten places in each field to
a maximum depth of about 10 cm. The
pooled sample from each field was then
mixed well, dried at room temperature,
sieved through a 2 mm mesh and a
subsample was then taken and stored at —
