88 ÍSLENZKAR LANDBÚNAÐARRANNSÓKNIR SUMMARY Excess hoof growth in 4 — 5 month old lambs Stefán Aðalsteinsson, Agr.Res. Institute Keldnaholt, Reykjavík. In the autumn of 1982, three female lambs with excess hoof growth were observed in a piebald sheep strain in the flock at The Agricultural School Holar in North Ice- land. The hooves were up to 7 cm in length, and the affected lambs had difficulty in walking. HEIMILDIR-REFERENCES Páll A. Pálsson, 1955: Nokkrir húðkvillar í sauðfé. Búnaðarrit, 68. : 20-45. All the affected almbs were born from half-sib matings where the common grand- sire was Bekkur 244. cfr. Table 1. The condition is therefore suspected to be hereditary and most likely due to a single autosomal recessive gene. The number of lambs born from matings of suspected carriers to daughters of suspected carriers is shown in Table 2. The observed ratio of affected progeny (3/51) does not differ significantly from expectation (6.375/51).
