of the last 20 years. It is furthermore shown by comparing its % in the field
with that of the seedmixture that the previousiy used strains of perennial ryegrass,
orchardgrass, bromegrass and even tall fescue are too soft for general use in seed-
mixtures for Iceland. The meadow foxtail from Finland has survived best of all
imported grasses, the Timothy being second in stability. Some native grasses, such
as tufted hairgrass, redtop and red fescue, are found to invade the fields in short
time.
In conclusion is discussed the botanical composition on different soils in S- and
N-Iceland. Based on the fact that these were found of such great variation accor-
ding to soils, a use of 3 diff. seedmixtures with hardy varietics was proposed.
