Part of our self image is also created
by how we live and a better environ-
ment must increase the well being
of all of us.
Seen from the point of view of
the builder, a well designed house
costs more in fees to the architect
but the logical conclusion should be
that it would sell for a higher price.
It should also sell quicker and this
is also not of less importance for
the builder. A well designed house
where good use is made of the
space can also be cheaper to build.
Housing which is designed for build-
ers has also to suit most people as
the buyer is generally unknown. It is
also important that the interior can
be altered to suit the needs and
wishes of the buyer. These can be
different as family patterns are com-
plicated and varied.
The housing market must also be
varíed so that everybody can find
something to his/her liking. In small
accommodation you are limited
and the demand is for maximum
utilization and tolerable quality all
the way from the buyers of cheap
flats in blocks of flats to the buyers
of expensive villas. Everybody has
the right to have the benefit of good
design.
Whether one is discussing the
purchase or building of properties,
experience tells us that long term
goals are more important than short
term - a building is here to stay. We
have to realize that architecture is
no private concern of architects but
something that everybody should
enjoy and be concious of. The main
purpose should be the enjoyment of
as many contributions of the archi-
tect as possible. Part of this is to
inform people of the importance of
architecture in a cultural society. The
unity of architects is also important
in this connection.
What I have tried to argue in this
article is that if increased importance
is given to good design of hous-
ing, everybody will gain, directly or
indirectly; the public, builders and
architects. This is all important and
therefore we should support good
architecture. ■
