NÁTTÚRUFRÆÐINGURINN 73 APPENDIX The nesting success ol the gyrfalcons at the eyries studied in the Lake Mý- vatn area in 1960—1970. Breeding unknown means that neither positive nor negative evidence were found despite investigations. Statements about the number of young hatched refer to number of young less than or about one week old; thus not taking into account possible addled eggs or young that died immediately upon hatching. Dalfjall 1960—1961; Breeding unknown. 1962: Breeding but no information on the nurnber of young. 1963: Three young hatched and fledged. No further observations wcre made. 1964: Five young hatched and fledged. One week after fledging 4 juveniles were seen around the eyrie but one week later only 3. The fate of the two ntissing íledgings was not known. 1965: Three young hatched and fledged. No lurther observations were made. 1966: Five young hatched but two of them disappeared within the first week upon hatching. No data on post-fledging success available. 1967: Not investigated. 1968—1970: Not breeding. Dimmuborgir 1960: Breeding but no information on the number of young. 1961: Three young liatched and fledged. All alive two weeks after fledging. 1962: Two young hatched and fledged. Botli alive two veeks after fledging. 1963: Not breeding. 1964: Three young liatched ancl fledged. No further observations were made. 1965: Not breeding. 1966: Four young hatched but the complete brood disappeared just prior to fledging; possiltly taken by man (c/ Vindbelgjarfjall 1966). 1967: Not investigated. 1968: Not breeding. 1969: Strong indications of breeding (falcons transporting prey) although no nest was found. 1970: Not breeding. Gaesafjöll 1960: Breeding unknown. 1961: Breeding but no information on number of young. 1962—1963: Breeding unknown. 1964: Four young hatched but fledging success unknown. 1965: Four young hatched but fledging success unknown. 1966: Unknown. 1967: Not investigated.
