Það var ómet- anleg reynsla að deila hádegismat af lambakjöti með caracara-fuglum (Phalcoboenus australis), sem eru há- vaðasamir betlarar, og vera ein með tuttugu sæfílum (Mirounga leonina), sem liggja á sandinum og berjast til að sannfæra hver annan um hver er sterkastur. HEIMILD Woods, Robin W. 1989. Guide to Birds of the Falkland Islands. Anthony Nelson, Oswestry, Shropshire, England. 256 bls. SUMMARY The bird life in the Falkland Islands Terry C. Lacy Huldulandi 3 IS-108 REYKJAVÍK Iceland Unlike Iceland, the Falkland Islands are not basaltic and have no main landmass; they are divided into two main islands and many small ones. The summer climate is very like Iceland, but the winter climate milder as the islands do not lie as far south as Iceland is north. There is a shortage of insectivora and therefore of passeri- formes. Various species found in Iceland have their counterparts in the Falklands, such as gulls, tern, and thrush. But the Falklands fauna includes 5 nesting species of penguins as well as sea elephants. 23
