This paper is the first of five dealing
with 32 species of vagrant shorebirds rec-
orded in Iceland. The seven species cov-
ered in this paper are all rare vagrants (six
records or less), except Pluvialis squataro-
la, which has been recorded annually dur-
ing the past decade.
For each species discussed, general life
history information is given, followed by
listing of Icelandic records through 1980.
