SUMMARY New aeromagnetic maps of Iceland by Geirfinnur Jónsson and Leó Kristjánsson, Science Institute, University of lceland, Dunhaga 5, IS-107 REYKJAVÍK, Iceland. This paper outlines the aeromagnetic method used in geophysical surveying. The most common types of magnetometer and positioning devices are discussed briefly, as well as the main geological fea- tures which may be investigated by this method in basalt areas. We describe the historical development of this subject in Iceland, which is treated in more detail in our previous publications (see reference list), and we present a simplified map of positive and negative anomaly lineations (Fig. 3). The main technical improvement in these surveys in recent years has been the introduction of GPS navigation in 1991. 55
